Like most phones today, Android smartphones and tablets come with a built in camera or cameras with features such as flash, zoom, video and so on. Some have one camera in the rear and others have cameras in the front and rear. These cameras are usually 5 megapixels or higher and offer many advanced features that you would find on standalone digital cameras making the need for a separate camera obsolete unless you want the features of high end SLR cameras for example.

Smartphone cameras actually get used more often than digital cameras since everyone always has their phone on them but won't always carry a camera on them. Because of this it's nice to have all the features of you digital camera included with your phone's camera. The Android camera functions in pretty much the same way as your standard digital camera. Plus many smartphones and tablets have 1080p video recording capability.

To use the Android camera simply find the camera app on your device and open it. It will usually default to still camera rather than video camera. Now all you need to do is point at what you want to take a picture of and press the button and you will have taken a picture with your Android. On most devices there will be an external button on the device or you can use the onscreen button to take the picture. To switch to video camera mode simply slide the mode selector from camera to video camera.

There are many settings that you can adjust on the Android camera to get the best picture possible out of your device. These settings may vary from model to model or with different OS versions but here are the camera settings basics.

The zoom setting is pretty self-explanatory and offers you a digital zoom feature from 1x to 4x and possibly higher depending on your model. Keep in mind that digital zoom will not be as clear as optical zoom so you may get some quality loss when using it.

The flash can be set to auto, on or off depending on your needs. For most cases you will leave it on auto but there may be times when a picture will come out better without the flash or if you don't want to deal with people blinking every time it goes off.

White balance can be adjusted to match the conditions where you are taking your picture. Your choices are auto, incandescent, daylight, fluorescent and cloudy.

Store location is used to store location information as part of the image metadata from where the picture was taken by using the GPS. Then you can go to your gallery to look at the picture and choose details to see exactly where the picture was taken or see the location on a map.

Focus and exposure are used to set the focus to auto, infinity or macro. Most of the time auto will work fine but you can use infinity for very low light or night photography and macro for really close images where you would have the camera right up against what you are taking a picture of such as a coin or insect for example.

When you switch to video mode the settings you have for the camera change a little.

The video quality setting can be set to high, low, MMS or YouTube. MMS is what you would use if you plan on sending the video via a text message and YouTube is what you would use if you wanted to post your video directly to YouTube.

The flash mode and white balance options are the same as they are for the still camera. If you turn the flash mode on then the flash will stay lit the whole time you are recording.

Color effect is used to add different effects to your video to add a custom touch without having to use video editing software. The effects you can use include mono, sepia, negative, solarize, red tint, blue tint and green tint.

As you can see the Android camera is pretty versatile for a phone or tablet camera and most likely will be getting even better as newer models come out. Once you use it for awhile it will becomes really easy to take good pictures and videos that are comparable to your digital camera's quality or maybe even better.

Just keep in mind that you can only hold so many pictures and videos on your camera's memory or SD card so don't go overboard! So try out the settings for yourself and see what kind of pictures and videos you can take.
